philosophy

natasha naomi (b. 1977)

i am a dutch–danish artist working from my home studio in wellington, new zealand

my work is an accumulation of a lifelong exploration of material and observation that began when i was young. my practice is founded on a deep appreciation for materials that not only hold history but continue to offer value beyond their original use. all the fabric used in my collage works is re-purposed, having been collected over several years

i work across a range of mediums including handmade paper, linen and cotton, each offering a balance of fragility and substance. no single medium defines my practice, allowing expression to shift between disciplines

drawing from visual memory, sensory imprint and olfactory association, my work is structured through translated memory, instinct and awareness of how tone and atmosphere interact in the moment. working within muted palettes and restraint, tactility becomes the primary visual language

my work is intended to exist on its own merits, where perception itself becomes the subject. there is no prescribed interpretation,
only an invitation to step closer

the materials remember.
the residue remains.
